She believes in ghosts. He believes in aliens. They are both right. Our guide to the wildest manga of the 2020s.
Momo Ayase believes in ghosts but not aliens. Her nerdy classmate, nicknamed Okarun, believes in aliens but not ghosts. To prove each other wrong, she visits an alien hotspot and he visits a haunted tunnel, and both of them get far more than they bargained for. That is the setup of Dandadan, a gloriously chaotic mix of romance, horror and sci-fi.

Where Dandadan came from
Before creating Dandadan, Yukinobu Tatsu worked as an assistant on Tatsuki Fujimoto's Chainsaw Man, and you can feel a similar fearless energy. Dandadan launched on Shueisha's Shōnen Jump+ app and website on April 6, 2021, and quickly became one of the platform's biggest hits.
The story: yokai, aliens and a lost pair of balls
After their first encounters, Momo awakens psychic powers and Okarun is possessed by the Turbo Granny, a speedy yokai who steals a rather personal part of him. The pair set off to recover what was taken, fighting aliens, ghosts and urban legends along the way.
Beneath the absurdity, Dandadan is a sweet coming-of-age romance and has some surprisingly moving backstories. Arcs like the Acrobatic Silky story have left readers in tears between the jokes.
From page to screen: the Science Saru anime
Science Saru's anime, directed by Fūga Yamashiro, adapted the series with explosive, inventive animation. Its first season of 12 episodes was a breakout hit, and the second season aired from July 4 to September 19, 2025. The opening theme became a viral sensation in its own right.
Yukinobu Tatsu's art
Tatsu's art is incredibly detailed, especially in the alien and yokai designs, and his action pages are packed with motion. He switches between horror, comedy and romance in the space of a few panels, which makes every chapter feel unpredictable.
Why Dandadan matters
Dandadan won the 71st Shogakukan Manga Award in 2026 and passed 10 million copies by March 2025. It shows how digital-first platforms like Shōnen Jump+ are now producing some of manga's biggest global hits.
