A fresh start for Kara
DC announced the series in early 2025 as part of its regular DC All In continuity, with Supergirl #1 on sale on 14 May 2025. Sophie Campbell, a long-time writer on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, both writes and draws the book, which gives it a very consistent look. She has talked about drawing on the 1970s comics, the 1984 Supergirl film and the CW TV show as influences.
The premise is simple and warm: Kara returns to Midvale, the town where she grew up on Earth, only to find someone else has been protecting it. The first issue also debuts a new costume designed by Stanley “Artgerm” Lau.
The first story arcs
The opening issues pair Kara with Lena Luthor to deal with the Midvale impostor, Lesla-Lar, and a giant Titano. #3 features the debut of Satan Girl. In #5, a flipbook issue, the Super-Pets take over the story with the newest members of the family, Titano and Kandy. #6 is a Halloween story in which Kara is haunted by nightmares and Nightflame returns, and #7 is a Thanksgiving dinner where Lex Luthor visits the Danvers table.

Into Kandor and the Reign of the Superboys
From #11, Kara leaves Midvale to help the survivors in the bottled city of Kandor, where the younger generation is in revolt against the Science Council. The rebel leader Black Flame becomes a major threat, and the Council responds with a clone team called Team Thunder. The storyline builds to the fight in #15, where Black Flame tries to escape Kandor.
Kingdom of Zod
#16 begins Kingdom of Zod, in which General Zod has taken over the Kryptonite Kingdom of El Caldero and Supergirl gathers her own “Super Force” to take him on. The crossover includes appearances from Superboy, Superboy-Prime, Steel and Lois Lane, and by #17 Supergirl and Ursa are travelling back to Krypton's past.

An ongoing story
The run is still being published, so more issues keep arriving.
Supergirl beyond the page
- Supergirl (1984): a film that Campbell has cited as one of her influences.
- Supergirl (TV): the CW series, which she also names as an inspiration.
- Earlier Supergirl comics: Kara first appeared in Action Comics in the late 50s, and she has had several series since.
Why this series matters
Supergirl Vol. 8 is a deliberate step away from the grimmer Kara stories and towards something more personal and hopeful. It treats Midvale, friendships and humour as seriously as its fights, which is why collectors and new readers have been paying attention.
