Where Vampire Knight came from
Matsuri Hino's Vampire Knight ran in Hakusensha's shōjo magazine LaLa and became one of the defining shōjo manga of the 2000s. In English, Viz serialised it in its Shojo Beat magazine from 2006 to 2009 and went on to publish all 19 volumes, making it a cornerstone of many Western shōjo collections.
The story: love, blood and secrets
Yuki was saved from a vampire attack as a child by Kaname and has no memories before that night. Zero lost his family to a pureblood and hates vampires, yet carries a dark secret of his own. The love triangle between the three drives the series, but beneath it lies a complex mythology of pureblood families, vampire hunters and a past that Yuki must eventually face.
From page to screen: the Vampire Knight anime
The anime adapted the series in 2008 across two seasons. The second, Vampire Knight Guilty, aired 13 episodes from October 7 to December 30, 2008. Its moody visuals and soundtrack helped make the series a staple of 2000s anime fandom.
Matsuri Hino's art
Hino's elegant linework, gothic fashion and dramatic, rose-strewn covers are a huge part of the appeal. Lined up together, the Vampire Knight volumes make one of the prettiest shelves in shōjo manga.
The sequel: Vampire Knight: Memories
Years after the main story ended, Hino returned to the world with Vampire Knight: Memories, launched in LaLa DX. It explores what happened to the characters after the finale, and we often have Vampire Knight: Memories volumes alongside the main series.
