One-Punch Man Manga & Anime Guide: ONE and Yusuke Murata's Superhero Parody

He can defeat any enemy with a single punch, and he is bored out of his mind. Our guide to One-Punch Man.

Saitama trained so hard that his hair fell out and he can now defeat any opponent with a single punch. That sounds amazing, but it has left him with a problem: nothing is a challenge anymore. One-Punch Man is a superhero parody, a spectacular action manga and a surprisingly thoughtful story about finding meaning, all at once.

One-Punch Man is a steady favourite in our shop, and we usually carry a wide spread of Viz's volumes. Here is our guide to the series, its unusual origins, the anime and the volumes worth knowing. Browse our One-Punch Man manga.

Where One-Punch Man came from

One-Punch Man began in early 2009 as a webcomic by the artist ONE, whose drawings were famously rough but full of brilliant ideas. It went viral, and in June 2012 Yusuke Murata, the acclaimed artist of Eyeshield 21, began redrawing it as a remake on Shueisha's Tonari no Young Jump website. The combination of ONE's storytelling and Murata's jaw-dropping art made it a global hit.

The story: a hero for fun

Saitama is a hero "for fun". He joins the Hero Association, which mobilises superheroes to defend humanity, only to discover that the official rankings ignore him because nobody believes what he can do. His cyborg disciple Genos follows him everywhere, taking notes on every word.

As the series goes on, the story becomes about everyone around Saitama: the heroes trying their best, the monsters threatening the city and Garou, a martial artist who wants to become the ultimate monster. The Monster Association arc, one of the longest arcs in the manga, contains some of Murata's most spectacular artwork.

From page to screen: the anime

Madhouse's first season, broadcast from October to December 2015, became a sensation thanks to its stunning fight animation. J.C.Staff produced a second season from April to July 2019, and a third season from October to December 2025, continuing the story into the Monster Association arc.

ONE and Yusuke Murata

ONE is also the creator of Mob Psycho 100, another hit adapted into anime. Murata is regarded as one of the most technically skilled artists in manga, and he is known for redrawing and improving pages between the web release and the printed volumes, which makes the collected books the definitive version.

Why One-Punch Man matters

One-Punch Man is a rare case of a webcomic becoming a global franchise, and it has sold over 38 million copies. Its mix of superhero parody and sincere heroism has inspired countless memes, and Saitama's bald, plain-faced design has become one of the most recognisable in anime.
